Insulation and insulating window treatments
Although the cost of insulating pleated shades is high just to change out your window treatments, if you are in need of new shades they are a good choice for energy savings. Open the shades during the day in the winter and close them at night. In the summer, keep them closed during the day. The savings on your gas and electric bill are significant. Simply checking your insulation; replacing it with new higher R-value is one good step, but even better is to make sure any air gaps on your house shell are filled with caulk or foam insulation. One big place to look for air infiltration is at the sill plate in the basement.
