Curb Your Car Week Spring 2010 Results

The Spring 2010 Curb Your Car Week event took place the week of May 16 to 22, 2010. During that week, 184 residents from Brighton and Rochester registered their pledge to walk, bike, carpool, or ride the bus for at least a day as an alternative to drive their car.

In their own words

Thank you for doing this! I loved not driving my car every day and remembering to combine trips in order to save gas, time, and reduce my carbon footprint! This was great and this time I really made a huge effort not to drive much at all if possible.

I rode my bike to work last week for the first time as a part of this program. I had not rode on those rodes since last fall. What a difference in bike accessiblitly. Clover Road and the canal paths are much more biker friendly. I can’t do this everyday as a single mom trying to get my daughter to daycare usually, but look forward to the day I can. I took up road biking a few years ago and I am just very appreciative of all the steps Brighton has taken to improve the roads, signs, and promoting of green living. 🙂

This is an amazing program and I’m thankful that it continues to grow in popularity!

Perhaps add another category for if you do drive your car… I can hypermile up to 53mpg using driving techniques (base mpg we typically get without hypermiling is 33mpg).

I normally commute the 28 km round trip to / from work by bicycle three times per week, if possible. This week I made it five, and used the bike for errands as well. I was not in a motor vehicle from Sunday afternoon until Friday night. I’m inspired to keep doing this as much as possible!

It is hard to save miles when one makes few trips and lives close to most places frequently visited. Great project though and fun to find ways to conserve miles driven.

I have been combining trips for several years now. Telecommuting and working from home are a new thing for me, but I could get used to it.

This was an easy week for us — we observed the holiday of Shavuot and Shabbat and that means that we didn’t drive our cars anywhere.

I take bus route 91 to work.  RTS eliminated one of the runs. Now many fewer people take the bus. That’s the opposite of of going green. How do we advocate for more and better bus service?

Commuting by bus was pretty easy and the time of year was convenient as the Lilac Festival makes driving a little less pleasurable.

I commute by bicycle throughout the year, 2-3 days per week normally. This week I biked 4 days. One day I rode with my 9 and 11 year old sons to FRES school (they normally take the bus). I thought it would be a relaxing, fun ride, but the traffic at 8:30am is just ugly. We need safe routes to school! Thanks for your efforts to get cars off the road!

I bike to work between April and October every day when the weather allows.

You are so great to do this wonderful annual event. It has to help in many ways — hopefully to get folks to combine trips and use other modes of transportation other than their cars.

I drove my Vespa scooter five days for a total of 60 miles and I drove my car two days 25 miles total. I am happy to report I used less than two gallons of gas for the week. Given the fact I’m 62 years old and I start work between 5am and 6am, walking was not an option.
